JUST- IN: Federal Government Puts WAEC, NECO Fee Increase On Hold
The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), pending a comprehensive review and consultations with stakeholders.
The decision followed widespread criticism that greeted the planned fee hike.
The suspension was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.
According to the Ministry, the June 18, 2026 circular conveying the proposed increase in WAEC and NECO examination fees has been withdrawn to allow for further consultations.
It explained that the proposed review was necessitated by prevailing economic realities and the rising cost of conducting credible national examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment and quality assurance.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policymaking.
“The Ministry acknowledges the concerns and constructive feedback received from the public and appreciates the keen interest shown by Nigerians in matters relating to access to quality education,” the statement read.
It added that the decision reflects the government’s resolve to ensure that policies affecting millions of students and their families are carefully considered and responsive to the public interest.
The Ministry said it would engage examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents’ associations, organised labour and other stakeholders before reaching a final decision on examination registration fees.
It stressed that the proposed increase would not take effect until the consultation process is concluded.
Reaffirming its commitment to equitable access to quality education, the Ministry said the welfare of students and responsible policymaking remain central to the Federal Government’s education agenda.
The proposed fee increase had drawn criticism from education stakeholders and members of the public.
On Sunday, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, described the planned increase in WAEC and NECO examination fees as insensitive in view of the country’s economic challenges.
