‘Victory For Humanity’: Oyo NUT Celebrates Release of Abducted Teachers, Pupils
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has described the release of the teachers and learners abducted in Oriire Local Government Area as “a victory for humanity,” saying their freedom has restored hope to the education sector.
In a statement jointly signed by the union’s Chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the NUT said the victims’ safe return had lifted a heavy burden from the hearts of teachers, pupils, parents, relatives and lovers of education across Oyo State and beyond.
The union noted that the incident tested the resilience of the education community but commended teachers across the state for remaining united while praying and hoping for the safe return of their colleagues and learners.
The NUT expressed appreciation to the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Oyo State Government led by Governor Seyi Makinde for demonstrating the political will to deploy available resources toward securing the victims’ freedom.
It also commended security agencies for their professionalism, courage and collaboration, describing their efforts as reassuring to citizens and the education community.
The union further acknowledged the support of its national leadership led by Comrade Audu Titus Amba, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, education stakeholders, media organisations, civil society groups and other Nigerians whose prayers and solidarity sustained the affected families during the victims’ captivity.
While celebrating the victims’ return, the NUT extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident and urged governments at all levels to strengthen security around schools and communities.
According to the union, every child deserves to learn in a safe environment, while every teacher deserves to carry out professional duties without fear.
The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and other stakeholders to promote safe schools and quality education, expressing confidence that the unfortunate incident would strengthen collective efforts to protect lives and secure the future of Nigerian children.
