JUST-IN: Senate Rejects Probe Motion On Controversial Presidential Intervention Council
Lawmakers declined to debate a motion seeking an investigation into the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), citing an ongoing ICPC probe ordered by President Bola Tinubu.
The Senate on Wednesday rejected a motion seeking a comprehensive investigation into the budgetary allocation, operations and controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
The motion, sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kawu, who represents Kano South, was presented during plenary as a matter of urgent public importance.
Kawu told the Senate that the controversy surrounding the council had generated widespread public concern, with allegations and counter-allegations raising questions about its operations and the integrity of government institutions.
He urged the upper chamber to investigate the council’s budgetary allocation and activities to safeguard the credibility of both the Senate and the Federal Government.
However, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, ruled that the motion should not be debated.
Jibrin explained that President Bola Tinubu had already directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter, adding that the Senate should allow the Executive to complete its probe before taking further action.
The ruling effectively halted deliberations on the proposed investigation, leaving the ICPC-led probe as the government’s primary response to the controversy surrounding the council.
