Barely a week after some protests ensued in Oyo state, fresh ones have emerged in different areas of the state’s capital.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, residents in Ibadan witnessed another series of protests in different parts of Ibadan amidst the fuel and naira scarcity.
The protests when inquired were reactions toward the continued hardship in accessing Naira notes and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) known as petrol.
Sources reveal that protesters stormed the street to express their displeasure over the fuel and naira crises by burning tires and blocking major roads which have now caused huge traffic hindering movements.
A witness who spoke with The Pendulum Media disclosed that aside from the serious difficulty in getting fuel and naira notes, the protest could also be political as a result of the forthcoming elections.
Other witnesses at the scenes disclosed that the transporters led the protests around the Eleyele/Ologuneru axis of Ibadan and were seen obstructing the free flow of vehicular and pedestrian movements around the areas preventing movement for the unprepared residents.
However, it was gathered that the transporters said they were out in protest over the nonavailability of cash, as well as, the rejection of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes by passengers and some filling stations.
Areas with heavy traffic and road blockage include Eleyele, Ologuneru, and adjourning areas
Also, other places with pockets of protests according to sources include Gbopa, Ologuneru, Apete, Sango, Poly road, Iwo road, Mokola, UI, Bodija Ashi, and Oju-Irin axis.
As at the time of filing this report, there is serious apprehension across the city as many people have been going about in panic and fear of the unknown.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Oyo State Police Command have not been fruitful as at the time of this report.
