2023 World Teachers’ Day: Emmanuel Alayande University of Education Organises Symposium to Commemorate Occasion
Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo on Thursday, 5th October 2023 marked this year’s World Teachers’ Day with an organised symposium.
The event, is themed, “The Teachers We Need for The Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teachers’ Shortage”.
was well attended by both the staff and students of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education from the nursery to the institution level.
The program was organised to celebrate with Teachers all over the world and a special one for Professor Olanrewaju A. Olaniyan who became the First Vice Chancellor of the School.
In his address, Prof. Olanrewaju appreciated the Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde for converting the college of education which began as a Teacher’s Grade 2 college to a University. He noted that the school was officially inaugurated on 16th Dec, 2022, while he was appointed as the vice-chancellor on 9th Aug, 2023; Adding that before the end of the year, the institution would produce her first set of undergraduates. He said, “There are universities and there are universities, this is The University of Education”.
On the theme, he said that the crux of the matter is “to teach our students to read, teach our students to pass, teach our students to behave well”. He also noted that the problem in the Global theme dwells on teacher shortages but expressed that Emmanuel Alayande University of Education is well-positioned to eradicate the shortages found in the teaching profession.
Duly represented by a younger colleague, the Chairman, of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Oyo zone, Mr. Kazeem Adesina Adeleke who was unavoidably absent at the programme which took place at the BOT, LLT, faculty of Science Education of the institution said education is the life wire of a nation, hence the need to be more intentional on the kind of education and teachers, Nigeria as a nation wants.
“All the chairmen are now presently at Ibadan for this same program to celebrate the teacher’s day. We thank God today for the opportunity and also the bodies concerned that made today a reality. Among them, are UNESCO, and the International Labour Organisation, ILO.
“These bodies have tried to make sure that Teachers are not left out. We are being celebrated every year. That’s why October 5th of every year is picked to be celebrated by the teachers. We have a slogan under NUT which is “If you can read and write, thank the teachers” She said.
Adeleke added that both the Federal and State governments should fund the education sector so that it can produce the expected result.
“This education calls for sponsoring from FG and SG to make the sector produce the desired result which will stimulate national development. Education requires the needed manpower for national development.”
The chairman, while addressing the students also pointed out that as the theme addresses a global problem that is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, students should begin to see today’s education as one that goes beyond obtaining a certificate.
“Many students think getting an education involves you getting a white-collar job. It goes beyond that. Many of you think education only requires you to read and pass exams and if you get it wrong now, you can’t get it right. What we are saying is that I want you to start preparing your mind that education goes beyond that, it goes beyond getting a certificate.”
Equally, Mrs. Olakunbi Ajao, ANCOPSS representative, Oyo Zone also dwelled on the topic of the symposium saying, that the status of education in the country can still be worked if everyone contributes their quota.
Speaking further, the Head, of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, Dr. Abiodun I. Gbenro also made several highlights on the kind of education needed and the teachers required.
Cultural displays and presentations were, however, rendered by students from the Dramatic and Music departments of the school.
