“You dey mad?”: PSC Promises to Use Seun Kuti as Scapegoat
The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Sunday has vowed to promptly prosecute Seun Kuti for his uncontrolled behaviour of assaulting a Nigerian Police Officer; this, it said would serve as a deterrent to others.
Kuti, son of Afrobeat maestro, Fela Kuti yesterday was captured in a viral video assaulting an officer repeatedly saying; You dey mad?” in pidgin while slapping the policeman.
Recall, The Pendulum Media reported on Saturday that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba immediately ordered for his arrest in reaction to Kuti’s defilement of the country’s symbol of authority.
However, in a statement released on Sunday; the Chairperson of the PSC, Solomon Arase, said no matter the offence, nobody had the right to assault a police officer on official duty.
PSC’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani quoted Arase to have frowned at the effrontery Kuti had to have slapped the policeman.
“We must, as civilized people, explore established channels of complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement officials rather than this uncouth behaviour of assaulting the country’s symbol of authority. We look forward to the prompt prosecution of Kuti to act as a deterrent to others,” he was quoted as saying.
But Kuti, while reacting to the development via Instagram, claimed the officer attempted to kill him and his family members; noting the policeman had apologized and he had in turn forgiven him.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologized and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job.”
The musician, also said he welcomed the investigation on the order to arrest him.
“I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” he wrote.
