Oyo Begins 20,000-Tree Planting After Power Project Claims 9,827 Trees
The Oyo State Government has commenced the planting of about 20,000 tree seedlings to replace trees affected by the installation of a 33KV industrial power line from Adebayo to the Mamu end of the Gambari Forest Reserve along the Ibadan-Ijebu Ode Road.
The exercise, organised through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, was flagged off by the ministry’s Coordinating Director, Dr Adesina Evelyn Olufunmilayo, on behalf of the Commissioner, Ademola Aderinto.
According to the commissioner, about 9,827 trees were affected by the power project. He said the government was responding through its “Cut One, Plant Two” policy, which requires two trees to be planted for every tree removed.
Aderinto said the replacement exercise would focus mainly on indigenous tree species to restore the affected forest resources, protect biodiversity and support efforts to mitigate climate change.
He disclosed that the initiative was facilitated by Crystalighening Power Solutions Limited through Environmental Managers Consult as part of efforts to restore the affected forest area.
The commissioner described environmental protection as a collective responsibility and commended the company for supporting the state’s environmental restoration efforts.
He also praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to climate governance and environmental sustainability in Oyo State.
