Makinde: I Won’t Be Political Godfather After Leaving Office
Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has declared that he will not act as a political godfather or seek to control his successor after leaving office in May 2027.
Makinde made the declaration on Monday at the Hijrah 1448 Luncheon held at the State Banquet Hall, Government House, Ibadan.
The governor specifically assured the Allied People’s Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, and his running mate, Mufutau Open Salawu, that they would be allowed to govern independently if elected.
“I promise I will not be anyone’s godfather, including Bimbo Adekanmbi and Open Salawu. If given the opportunity, they will be accountable to the people of Oyo State,” Makinde said.
He said his administration had fulfilled most of its promises and would use its remaining months to consolidate its achievements while ensuring a smooth transition to the next administration.
Makinde urged voters to assess candidates based on competence, character and commitment to public service, rather than ethnicity, religion or other sentiments.
He also called on governorship candidates to focus their campaigns on issues and policies capable of advancing the state, instead of promoting division ahead of the 2027 election.
The governor thanked the Muslim community for its support over the years, recalling that he secured widespread support across religious lines during the 2023 election despite attempts to use religion to influence voters.
APM candidate Adekanmbi, who spoke at the event, thanked the Muslim community for its support and pledged to sustain the Hijrah celebration and other programmes associated with the Islamic community if elected.
