NBA Election: Yoruba Lawyers Call For Reforms, Poll Postponement
The Yoruba Lawyers Forum, Egbe Amofin Oodua, has called for the postponement of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, insisting that agreed electoral reforms must be implemented to guarantee a credible poll.
Addressing journalists in Ibadan, the Chairman of the forum’s Governing Council, Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), alleged that the NBA leadership reneged on an earlier agreement with stakeholders to delay the election and introduce reforms, including the use of National Identification Number (NIN)-linked phone numbers for voter authentication.
Olagunju argued that the current email-based electronic voting system remains vulnerable to manipulation, noting that complaints over the integrity of NBA elections have persisted since 2018. He also accused the association’s leadership of failing to maintain neutrality in the electoral process.
The senior advocate disclosed that Egbe Amofin Oodua had earlier challenged the composition of the NBA Electoral Committee in court and urged the association to postpone the election to allow adequate voter sensitisation and implementation of the proposed reforms.
“We are not fighting for any individual aspirant. We are fighting for the soul of the Nigerian Bar Association. What we seek is credibility, transparency and fairness,” Olagunju said, warning that conducting the election without the reforms could further erode members’ confidence in the electoral process.
