SWEGOP Seeks Tighter Border Security Following Oriire Pupils’ Rescue
The South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) has called on the Federal and state governments to strengthen security in Nigeria’s border communities following the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The guild made the call in a statement issued on Sunday and jointly signed by its Chairman, Bisi Oladele, and Public Relations Officer, Remi Oladoye.
SWEGOP commended President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the nation’s security agencies for their roles in securing the release of the over 40 schoolchildren and teachers, who regained their freedom on Friday after spending 57 days in captivity.
The guild described the successful rescue operation as proof that strong political will and effective collaboration among security agencies remain critical to tackling insecurity across the country.
It particularly applauded the gallantry, resilience and professionalism displayed by the military and other security personnel throughout the operation, noting that their commitment restored hope to the affected families and the people of Oyo State.
SWEGOP also sympathised with the families of security personnel and residents who lost their lives during the unfortunate incident, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased.
The guild noted that recent abductions have exposed the vulnerability of many border communities, where poor security presence, weak telecommunications networks, inadequate road infrastructure and easy escape routes into neighbouring countries have made residents easy targets for criminal groups.
It therefore urged governments at all levels to replicate the level of cooperation demonstrated during the Oriire rescue by strengthening collaboration among security agencies, community leaders and other critical stakeholders in protecting vulnerable communities.
The guild further called on the Federal and Oyo State governments to sustain investments in intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, rapid response mechanisms and community policing to improve security around schools and other vulnerable areas.
SWEGOP reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote peace, public safety and the protection of lives and property across the South-West and Nigeria as a whole.
The guild stressed that while the successful rescue of the Oriire pupils and teachers was a welcome development, authorities must remain proactive to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in any part of the country.
