Makinde Hails Release of Abducted Oriire Pupils, Teachers, Defends No-Ransom Policy
The Oyo State Government says the release of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government validates its decision to reject ransom payments and pursue a long-term strategy against kidnapping.
The Oyo State Government has confirmed the release of the pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area, describing their freedom as a victory for resilience and principled leadership.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government expressed gratitude that the victims had regained their freedom after spending weeks in captivity.
“We are happy to report to our people in Oyo State that our children and teachers at Oriire have been released from captivity,” the statement read.
Prince Oyelade said the successful release marked a significant test of the state’s resolve in confronting criminal elements, stressing that the government remained committed to its policy of rejecting ransom payments despite pressure to adopt what it described as a “quick-fix” approach.
According to him, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration demonstrated courage by refusing to pay ransom, arguing that doing so would only encourage kidnappers and strengthen criminal networks.
He added that the government’s strategy reflects its determination to tackle kidnapping and banditry through sustainable security measures rather than actions that could embolden criminal groups.
The commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that the state would continue working with security agencies to combat kidnapping and other forms of criminality across Oyo State.
