‘What She Feared’: Reactions As Netizens React To Late Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu’s Old Post
Social media has been thrown to frenzy over an old post of Late Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu that resurfaced.
The young reporter who died after an armed robbery incident at her apartment in Abuja had weeks ago penned an emotional thought on her X about Nigeria and herself.
Maduagwu on August 14, 2025 wrote, “I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.”
The statement has now drawn the attention of Nigerians weighing the gravity of her words and how it eventually played out in her life.

Somtochukwu, fondly called Sommie, died after sustaining severe injuries following a jump through her window in an attempt to escape the criminals who had stormed the building where she lived.
The Pendulum Media learned that the criminals moved from flat to flat, dispossessing residents of their belongings, while frantic calls to the police went unanswered.
When the police eventually arrived minutes later, she was still alive. But according to Nwachukwu, a close relative, eyewitnesses said the officers refused to take her to the hospital, claiming their patrol vehicle had no fuel.
Sommie managed to reach out to her mother’s close friend in Abuja for help, but by the time the woman arrived, she had died.
“Nigeria Happened to Her”
In a statement on Monday, ARISE News described her as “not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers”.
Former Anambra Governor, Mr. Peter Obi in a statement regarded the incident as “heartbreaking” noting that the country should prioritize the lives of its citizens.
His statement read in part;
“This heartbreaking incident once again highlights the urgent need for us as a country to prioritise the safety and security of every citizen. No Nigerian should go to bed fearful of what the night may bring, or lose their life in such senseless ways.”
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, while describing the death of Maduagwu as regrettable, grieved in writing with her immediate family and the Arise News team; promising to launch a swift investigation to the circumstances surrounding her demise.
