JUST-IN: Non- Academic Staff Unions Stage Protest, Shut UNILAG Gate Over Withheld Salaries
Academic activities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), were put on hold as non-academic staff unions began a protest to kick-start a seven-day warning strike.
The unions involved in the protest on Wednesday include the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU; the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions
NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists NAATS of the University of Lagos.
The protesting members of the union staged a peaceful protest in front of the school’s gate and blocked vehicular movement and hindered the free flow of traffic in the environment, the Vanguard Newspaper reports.
The Pendulum Media gathered that The protesters displayed various placards to register their grievances with the Federal Government over their withheld salaries.
Recall that the JAC of SSANU and NASU had, for about a month, called the government’s attention to its exclusion from the payment of the withheld salaries, which it commenced payment for the Academic Staff Union of Universities in February.
Their salaries were withheld when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari invoked a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ against the ASUU, SSANU and NAATS who embarked on a strike that lasted eight months, four months and five-and-half months respectively in 2022.
However, NAATS also joined and began its three-day warning strike today.
