Titan Sub: Over a Century Tragedy Recorded After ‘Titanic Ship’ Wreck
From time immemorial, being inquisitive has always been a part of humans and satisfaction never comes until the dreamed feat is achieved.
This brings to memory how the world’s largest ocean liner, built with state-of-the-art maritime technology, the famous ‘Titanic ship’ hit an iceberg over a hundred years ago after it sets sail with 2,240 people on board from Southampton on April 10, 1912, killing over 1500 passengers and crew with only 700 survivors.
Similarly, the Titan Submarine began its dive on Sunday, 18th June, 2023 towards the Titanic wreckage site tragically killing five tourists in what is currently being perceived as an impossible tour.
The five tourists included the pilot of the mission, OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani-born businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, both British citizens; and French oceanographer and renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who had visited the wreck dozens of times.
Reports say the motive of the tourists was to dive 4000 meters (13000 ft) to view the wreckage of the Titanic on the ocean floor which unfortunately led to their deaths.
According to the US Coast Guard, the missing submersible was destroyed in a ‘catastrophic implosion’ – an immense pressure in the ocean’s depths killing all five aboard.
It also said, they sank in the area of Newfoundland, 450 kilometers off the coasts of Canada in the Northern part of the Atlantic Ocean.
However, during the five-day international search, Authorities said a robotic diving vehicle discovered a debris field from the submersible Titan on the sea bed, and identified five major fragments of the vessel with no trace of human remains.
Reacting, the director of the hit 1997 “Titanic” movie James Cameron who had himself made 33 dives to the wreckage said the Titan submersive implosion will hurt citizens explorers.
Although, Maritime experts and historians have noted the Titan submersible operated outside of the regulations prompted by the Titanic disaster and did not need to conform to safety regulations since it operated in international waters, CNN reports
Friends and colleagues of the deceased have since paid tribute to the dead.
The White House also in a statement expressed how harrowing the ordeal must have been for the loved ones of the dead tourists.
“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives on the Titan. They have been through a harrowing ordeal over the past few days, and we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”
