Stay Away from Partisan Politics, NBC Warns Oyo Broadcasters

“…To those involved, please consider this as a warning.”

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Ibadan Zone has warned all journalists in Oyo State who might be involved in Partisan politics to desist in order to maintain professionalism.

In a press statement addressed to all stations in Ibadan by the NBC Zonal Director, Raphael Akpan disclosed that NBC came across a news story that some broadcast executives have been appointed to serve as members of the media campaign team of a candidate for one of the ruling parties in Oyo State.

The commission through Akpan wonders how such erring broadcasters could maintain professionalism once they are involved in partisan political activities.

The Zonal Director thereby warns compromising journalists to desist from engaging in the act by reminding them of the code and ethics of the profession guiding broadcasters; else, they will be sanctioned.

The statement reads in parts.
“Please refer to section 5.3.5 of the 6th edition of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code which states that:

While a Broadcaster may interact with politicians, in the course of professional duties, this shall not lead a reasonable person to believe that the broadcaster is either a member or sympathizer of any political party.

Please note that any violation of political broadcast as a result of this development shall be appropriately sanctioned. To those involved, please consider this as a warning.”
