Spain, To Discover If Men Avoid Household Chores Through App
To maintain gender balance, Spain’s Equality Ministry, says it is planning to launch an app in summer to discover whether men shun household chores or not.
Second in command of Spain’s Equality Ministry, Angela Rodriguez on Tuesday said a survey revealed that the bulk of the household task- a mental load falls on women, mostly.
” What survey tells us is that women spend a lot more time on household chores that men do”
She noted that women have a higher percentage in house chores engagement than men in a survey published in December from Spain’s National Statistics Institute revealing 45.9% of the female respondents carried the bulk of house chores in comparison to 14.9% of men.
Rodriguez, added at a meeting of the United States’ Committee on the elimination against discrimination against women in Geneva that to solve the problem of the house chores burden placed on women, an app similar to splitwise which allows groups to share the cost of meals or other spending would be launched soon.
According to her, the introduction of the app is to monitor how chores are shared among house members, in a bid to encourage gender equity.
Dish washing among others should be considered to be put on the app she added.
The Equality Minister, emphasized
that the app will allow each member of the household to input the time they spend on chores.
She concluded that the new development is a part of a wider “co – responsibility” plan from the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who came to power in 2018 promising to focus on gender issues; maintaining that couples, compromising parents, children and housemates stand a chance to benefit immensely from the app.
And for those not pleased with the introduction of the app, Rodriguez, on Twitter said they are scared of doing their chores at home.
“All those who are offended by the household chores app are really offended by the possibility that they will have to start doing their bit at home,” she wrote.
