Deborah Samuel, a level-two student was accused of putting a blasphemous post about Prophet Muhammed on her departmental Whatsapp group page and as a result, was burnt alive by a mob. This incident has caused quite a stir on social media.
Earlier, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah condemned the gruesome killing of the girl and then called for calm. Aminu Tambuwal, the Governor of Sokoto state have also decried the event and admonished people not to take laws into their hands but report any related issue to constituted authorities.
In a developing story, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, and his vice, Yemi Osinbajo also lent their voices to the gruesome killing of the lady. Saying, no person has the right to take the law into his or her hands in this country. Violence has and never will solve any problem,” said Mr. President.
While the President extended his condolences to the family of the deceased by wishing them a quick recovery, he in turn directed that the Ministry of Information and culture, work together with communication companies to help contain the spread of false and inflammatory information through social media. His directives have therefore generated multiple reactions on social media.
