PHOTOS: Oyo First Lady, Tamunominini Speaks on Menstrual Health Hygiene, Urges Girls to Break Silence on Challenges
Wife of Oyo state Governor, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde has encouraged young school girls in the state to speak up when faced with menstrual challenges.
Recall that The Pendulum Media made a report on Tuesday about Mrs Makinde’s annual event ‘Menstrual Hygiene Day’ always slated for every 19th of July.
Mrs. Makinde on Wednesday at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan held the event themed “A Day out with the Girls of Oyo state”. She lamented how menstrual hygiene remains a significant challenge for girls due to a lack of access to good sanitary pads, clean public toilets, and poor menstrual hygiene management.
She noted the event was to discuss and give proper menstrual education to girls in the state, adding that it is imperative for girls to know how to take care of themselves during their menstrual period.
“Healthcare is crucial during menstruation as your body undergoes natural hormonal changes, your menstrual hygiene matters because it directly impacts your well-being, education, and self-confidence”.
“Educate yourself and break the silence of menstrual challenges by talking to trusted guardian whenever the needed arises”.
“I’m glad we have the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Women Affairs here, and I hope they will work with school authority to ensure that have clean toilets, changing rooms and other in various schools in Oyo State”. She said.
At least, 1,100 girls from Secondary schools across 33 LGA benefitted from the talk on maintenance of menstrual hygiene and souvenirs shared.
Also, present at the event were officials of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, including the Permanent Secretary, Directors and Deputy Directors, as well as officials of the Ministries of Women Affairs, Health and Education in Oyo State.
Mrs Makinde, who thanked all who graced the occasion also appreciated her husband, the Governor of the state, Engr Seyi Makinde for supporting the project.
More importantly, she showed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for donating 3,000 re-usable sanitary pad for the girls.
She, however, encouraged both parents and guardians to help motivate their female children by talking to them about the menstrual cycle and sharing their experience
