Pa Akinkunmi’s Contribution to National Unity Will Remain Indellible- FG Mourns
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday mourned the death of the designer of the Nigerian national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi.
Pa Akinkunmi died in the early hours of Tuesday following a brief illness as reported by one of his children who announced his death on Facebook.
Reacting to his death, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris,
sympathised in a statement on Tuesday, that the ‘national icon’s’ contribution to national unity will remain indelible,”.
“I am particularly saddened over the news of the demise of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, a national icon, whose contribution to national unity will remain indelible,”. He said.
Idris expressed the death of
nonagenarian came at a time when Nigeria was reinventing itself for peace, development and enduring national reconciliation.
“I am confident that Pa Akinkunmi will continue to live in the minds of Nigerians for generations to come,” adding that the National Flag is one of the country’s revered symbols,- an asset for which Pa Akinwunmi has etched his name in the annals of Nigerian history.
“I, therefore, wish to use this opportunity to express my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, praying that God will grant them the fortitude to bear this great loss,” he noted.
Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR),
died at the age of 84, at his family home in Ibadan.
His design of the Nigerian National Flag was officially hoisted on Independence Day (October 1, 1960).
