The Armed Forces Remembrance Day for 2023 has been marked in Abuja on Sunday by President Muhammadu Buhari along with other senior members of the government.
The event took place at the National Arcade in Abuja and honors the memory of Nigeria’s fallen heroes with activities such as religious services, parades, and wreath-laying ceremonies.
The President, who arrived at the National Arcade at 10:05 am, was immediately ushered onto the saluting dais for the National Salute.
He also inspected the Guards of Honour, accompanied by the Commander, Brigade of Guards, Major General Muhammad Takuti Usman, after which he proceeded to the Cenotaph for the Wreath-Laying Ceremony.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Senate President Ahmed Lawan; Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola were also among those who laid the Wreaths after President Buhari.
The symbolic freeing of white doves out of the cage, performed by the President, is one of the other varieties carried out to commemorate the event.
Prayers were made to the lost soldiers who fought valiantly during major and minor wars within and outside Nigeria, and with an extension to the loved ones the departed soldiers left behind.
The 2023 wreath-laying ceremony will be President Buhari’s last as Commander-in-Chief.
