A staff of one of the commercial banks in Ibadan has raised some concerns about the rejection of the old #500 and #1000 notes paid to their customers over the counter.
Speaking to The Pendulum Media, the official of the bank said, the reason for the rejection of the old notes when inquired is the fear of it not being accepted as legal tender.
He stated that, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on the extension of the old notes till Dec 31st, the apex bank is yet to release an official statement to formally address Nigerians on the subject matter.
Recall that the Supreme Court judgment on Friday extended the validity of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN,) currency redesign policy to December 2023, and as such some deposit money banks especially in Kano and FCT have started paying out the old notes.
The official, further revealed that the bank, on Monday received from the apex bank, the old naira notes earlier deposited to the CBN last week which he said prompted the payment of the old notes over the counter.
He also shared an encounter he had with a commercial motorcyclist over the rejection of the old notes.
“I also made a withdrawal of 30,000 naira old notes but, unfortunately, I became stranded when I wanted to pay an okada rider and he rejected it. Since that was the only money I had on me, I had to call someone that brought 500naira for me to settle the bike man”. He said.
He, however, mentioned that even though no official statement from the CBN has been released on the acceptability of the old naira notes following the supreme court judgment, there is hope that the situation would get better in few days.
