Naira Controversy: Supreme Court Fixes March 3 for Judgement
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has declared that the contention over the naira redesign policy of the federal government will finally be resolved on 3rd March 2023.
On Wednesday, a seven-man panel of the apex court presided by Justice John Okoro announced the date for judgment shortly after taking all arguments for and against the policy.
Previously, three states involving Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara had sued the federal government over the implementation of the naira policy noting that such policy has brought hardship upon the country.
In addition, they had obtained an interim order from the apex court restraining the federal government from banning the use of the old N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes pending the hearing and determination of their interlocutory applications.
The states the court joined as parties in the suit were: Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Abia, Jigawa, Kano, Rivers, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state, Katsina.
All the suits the apex court consolidated and heard on Wednesday were marked: SC/CV/162/23, SC/CV/162/23, SC/CS/197/23, SC/CV/200/23, SC/CV/210, SC/CV/227, SC/CV/229/23 and SC/CV/222/23.
