Lent Commences In Nigeria With Ash Wednesday
Nigerian Christian faithful have joined other believers around the world to mark Ash Wednesday.
The event, which shows the Catholic Christians wearing ash with the cross sign on their foreheads officially heralds beginning of the Lenten season, leading to the celebration of Easter on April 20.
In the Catholic church, ashes are distributed as a mark to remind the faithfuls that they are dust and unto dust they shall return.
Christians are expected to reflect on the exemplary 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert, a period marked by reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual preparation.
Those who observe Lent are expected to fast and imbibe a Lenten discipline, like reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God.
