Lassa Outbreak Claims 14 In Taraba
Medical officials have confirmed that an outbreak of Lassa fever in Taraba State has now claimed 14 lives over the past three months.
The Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Dr. Kuni Joseph, Jalingo, revealed that
last week, with six people also lost their lives to Lassa fever.
Dr. Joseph noted that the outbreak has been unprecedented in the state.
He said, “This is the first time we are recording such a significant number of cases in Taraba State, and efforts are being made to address the outbreak,”.
Between October 24, 2024, and January this year, there have been 84 suspected cases of Lassa fever in the state, with 33 of those confirmed positive.
He added that despite the alarming figures, nine patients have been successfully treated and discharged, while six others remain on admission at FMC Jalingo.
Dr. Joseph, however, assured the public that steps are being taken to contain the outbreak.
“We have intensified our efforts, and with joint meetings held by FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), it will be addressed,” he added.
