Mrs Oroyemi Elizabeth is the proprietress of Covenant Orphanage and Welfare Centre in Moro, Osun State. In a close interview with her, we discovered that the welfare centre though privately owned, it is also registered under the government.
I had the vision in 2004 and then started fully in 2006. I was a headmistress of a school, and I used to manage the centre from the salary I earn. Today, the number of children we have here is 39.
According to her, the children she has were brought in from different sources such as the streets, State Government and even from hospitals. In an organisation such as this, it is impossible not to face challenges. Mrs Oroyemi declared some of those challenges she had faced.
“It is very impossible not to be faced with challenges, especially with this project. I have had spiritual, physical and even material problems but with God always on my side, it has always been easy. Some of the children even fall sick almost all the time while some develop dirty habits due to their backgrounds. But God has always been helping.”
The financial implication of managing her orphanage home is incredibly fascinating. According to her, “we receive contributions from individuals, fellowships on campuses; and remember I said, the home is registered under the government. So some contributions do come from the government too, which is fair enough. But you know, this is not the only motherless home around. So any time, the government has anything to share with welfare centres in Osun State, we are always remembered and the home is not left out.”
Her words of advice
There are so many cases of dumped babies around which is now getting out of hand. So, my sincere advice to students most especially is to abstain from un-godly relationships that could result in unwanted pregnancies. Per-adventure, you are a victim of rape and you decide to keep the pregnancy; once you give birth, take the baby to any Orphanage home you see around instead of throwing it away. Take for an instance; there was a girl that was brought here when the mother was going for her youth service and when she was through, she came back for her baby. Also, waiting for God’s own time is best for our students so that when they get a home they will be able to nurture their children in a godly way. Don’t throw away your baby the Orphanage home is opened.
