Gambian Squad Proceeds to AFCON 2023 as President Barrow Intervenes
Following the announcement of the setback experienced by the Gambian national football team, the
Gambia Football Federation GFF disclosed that Gambia President, Adama Barrow has stepped into the issue.
Recall that the flight carrying the Scorpions to the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2023 had returned to Banjul due to loss of oxygen, thereby causing a delay in arrival for the team.
GFF in a follow-up statement on its official page on Facebook announced that a new time has been scheduled and the team will take off by 4 pm today, Thursday.
The statement reads, “The Gambia Football Federation is pleased to announce that the Scorpions will leave the Banjul International Airport at 4 pm today following the intervention of His Excellency President Adama Barrow.
“Because the team wanted to fly directly to Yamoussoukro, which is a smaller airport and for security reasons there is special approval required for bigger flights to land there.
“Thus, President Barrow was in touch with his Ivorian counterpart Alassane Ouattara on the matter. In this regard, Air Côte d’Ivoire has already dispatched an Airbus 319 which will arrive in Banjul at midday to ferry the team.
“The permits have also been granted for the Airbus to land in Yamoussoukro instead of Abidjan.
The GFF takes this opportunity to thank His Excellency for his show of statesmanship once again in intervening and finding a quick solution.”
