FG Pegs Minimum Admission Age For Tertiary Institutions At 16
The Federal Government on Tuesday has officially set a required age for admission into the Nigerian tertiary institutions.
This was disclosed by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education,
during the opening of the ongoing Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Alausa disclosed that the government’s official minimum admission age is 16 and non-negotiable.
The government, by extension however cautioned that any admission carried out outside the Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, would be deemed illegal, and those responsible would face prosecution.
“This policy decision reflects a balance between cognitive maturity and academic preparedness. 16 years is non-negotiable,” he said.
He, however, acknowledged that exceptions could be made for gifted students who have advanced academically ahead of their age group. But such cases, he said, must be clearly documented and justified.
