Empowering Nigerian Girls, A Top Priority-Otesile
Government at all levels have been advised to prioritize skill empowerment of Nigerian girls to allow them compete favourably with their counterparts in other climes.
Executive Director, Hope For Second Chance Foundation (HOSEC) Mrs Ibukunoluwa Otesile gave the advise during a press conference at the Jide Adesina Female Basketball Competition held in Ibadan.
The competition was sponsored by a philanthropist, Mr. Jide Adesina to commemorate this year’s international day of the girl child.
Mrs. Otesile said it was important for Nigerian girls to enjoy quality education with sound skill acquisition which would put them in a better position to protect themselves and reduce their vulnerability.
During this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, the foundation has empowered over 600 schoolgirls in the states of Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); according to Mrs. Otesile, who identified poverty as a major factor contributing to sexual exploitation and trafficking of young Nigerian girls.
She stated, “Across our skill up a female child effort in five states, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Kaduna states and the FCT; we are able to empower 600 girls on diverse skills, catering, recycling, confectionary, renewable energy, web designing, among others.”
The female basketball competition’s sponsor, Mr. Jide Adesina, also spoke, emphasizing the need for the general public to provide a supportive environment for the ladies to succeed.
Mr Adesina also advocated more opportunities for girls in the sports sector, describing it as a way of empowering young girls to make them useful to their generation.
