Chimamanda Adiche Remembers Her Mother’s 80th Posthumous Birthday

Nigerian female writer, Chimamanda Adiche has remembered her late mother via her Instagram page on Tuesday.

The novelist described in a video featuring her brother and her mother to mark the posthumous birthday of her mum.

Reflecting on how she felt on her mum’s absence on the supposed big day, she wrote,

“It is still surreal how suddenly you left us, how swiftly our lives changed forever.
“You would have turned 80 today. We had always planned a big 80th birthday party.”

Adiche imagined how her mother could have appeared today on her 80th birthday, if she was alive.

“I imagine you, sparkling in a pink or purple george wrapper, fussing about which guests had not been served food, dancing and then telling us your back hurt, laughing your full light-filled laugh,” she added.

Famed Chimamanda Adiche, who is known for saucing her writings with her indigenous language, Igbo didn’t fail to adore her late mother fondly with it.
“Darling Mom-Mom, GC London, Electric, Eleti Oku, Asa Umunnachi, Ada Odigwe, Nwunye Odelora: Uwa m uwa ozo, I ga-abu nne m. Ka anyi dibe.” she penned.

Chucks Adiche, the novelist’s brother also shared a reel to commemorate the day. He wrote, “Her favorite color was purple. She would have been 80 today. I will celebrate her posthumous birthday by picking the first Olives from the Olive tree I planted an Olive tree in her memory in the garden. Continue to rest in peace”

Many Nigerians have since shared lovely tributes to the late mother and supporting words to the daughter, Chimamanda.

Grace Ifeoma Adichie was a mother to the Nigerian Novelist, Chimamanda Adiche. She died in March 2021, eight months after the author lost her father James Adiche to a brief illness.
