The hearing of the consolidated suits by 10 states against the Central Bank of Nigeria’s CBN new Naira policy has been adjourned till February 22, 2023.
Today, the Supreme Court of Nigeria was filled with a retinue of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, other lawyers, and the governors of Kaduna and Kogi states, Nasir El-Rufai and Yahaya Bello, respectively.
Previously, the Court had temporarily ruled against the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN from implementing the February 10 deadline on barring the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes as legal tender.
Aside from the Zamfara, Kogi, and Kaduna states which had instituted the suit against the Federal Government and the CBN; some other states have now applied to join in the suit which include; Niger, Kano, Ondo, and Ekiti states.
Justice John Okoro who began the
Court proceedings, leading a seven-man panel stated that the court should not lose sight of the case and its intention as it affects the suffering of Nigerians.
However, three other states have also applied to join in the suit; Lagos State, through its Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, Bayelsa State, led by Damian Dodo, and Edo State have applied to be joined in equally as respondents.
