Be Truthful and Fair- Akinade Charges Oyo Journalists As NUJ Begins Press Week

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Sunday held a church service to commemorate the beginning of 2023 NUJ Press Week.

The service, held at the Christ Apostolic Church, Eagle’s Wing, Wakajaiye, Ibadan, the state capital, had members of the council in attendance.

The presiding minister, Pastor J Akinade, in a message titled: “Speaking the Truth”, urged both worshippers and members of the press to speak the truth in their reportage.

Pastor Akinade noted that the nation including the government and masses relies on journalists to stay informed, adding that a nation that is not informed is deformed.

Speaking from the scripture, Exodus 23: 1-8, Pastor Akinade charged journalists to always bring to the consciousness of leaders the reason to do the right things by speaking the truth always.

According to him, journalists are privileged people who should know the truth and must discharge their duties without fear.

Similarly, he charged members of the union to be fair to the church leadership by seeking to know the truth before reporting negative stories.

“I want to charge you Journalists to be truthful and be fair to Christian leaders before you report negative stories about them. May God grant you wisdom from above that will make you rise above tribulations and storms of life”. Akinade said.

He, however, prayed for wisdom and guidance that will make them access helpers that will impact their business and life.

The cleric identified fairness, truthfulness, focus, and covenant practices as ways of getting access to unending mercy from above for journalists.

Speaking at the service, the Chairman of the state council of NUJ, Comrade Demola Babalola, said given the challenges of journalism, journalists in Oyo State needed to thank God for His grace, over the year.

He promised that journalists in the state would continue to discharge their legitimate duties without fear or favour.
