Arsonist: INEC Restates Commitment to Credible Polls
Residents have been assured by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, that the state elections in 2023 will proceed without a hitch despite the arson at the commission’s Abeokuta South Office.
Mr. Olaniyi Ijalaye, the resident electoral commissioner for Ogun State, assured reporters in Abeokuta that legitimate polls will take place in the state notwithstanding the terrible deed.
According to Mr. Ijalaye, who condemned the destruction of INEC’s property by unidentified arsonists, the commission is compiling a list of the items destroyed at the crime scene.
The Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner urged the populace to assist the authorities in identifying the wrongdoers and stated that the Nigerian Police Force and fire service needed to work together to get the situation under control.
He begged the population to always defend INEC facilities in their areas and to abstain from any actions that would endanger the stability of the nation and the growth of its democratic institutions.
According to Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, an investigation into the actions of the alleged arsonists at the INEC office in Abeokuta South has already begun.
