AFCON 2025 Qualifier: ‘We Have Decided Not To Play This Game’- Super Eagles Captain Ekong Says Over Inhumane Treatment In Libya
Nigerian Super Eagles Captain, William Ekong has announced the teams’ decision on the 2025 AFCON qualifier that will be played tomorrow.
Ekong pointed out that the team will not play the game due to the unpleasant treatment the players experienced at Libya airport, adding that their safety is also important as they cannot afford to make a three-hour bus ride travel from Al-Abraq to Benina, the game’s venue.
He said on X, “As the team captain together with the team we have decided that we will NOT play this game,
“…let them have the points.
“We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here even with security it’s not safe. We can only imagine what the hotel or food would be like given to us if we continued.”
Earlier, The Pendulum Media gathered that the Super Eagles players are said to be “sick and exhausted” after they were delayed at an abandoned airport, Al Abaq for over 13 hours.
It was said that the team’s chartered plane was diverted to the small airport, just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi Airport on Sunday night leaving the Nigerian delegation without food, beds and security.
Following this, the NFF have disclosed they are now making arrangements for the Super Eagles to fly back to Nigeria after the inhumane treatment the team have been subjected to in Libya ahead of 2025 AFCON qualifier.
The NFF said: “Players have resolved not to play the match any longer as NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home.”
The football federation fired an official complaint to CAF Sunday, but are yet to get a response.
