Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence aged 95, after a decade since he stood down because of ailing health.
His successor Pope Francis in a statement said, “With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican.
“Further information will be provided as soon as possible”
Earlier this year the former Pope admitted that there had been errors in the accusations of alleged child abuse while he was archbishop of Munich between 1977 and 1982.
