The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs says the global population has now reached an estimated 8 billion.
In a bid to mark World Population Day on Tuesday, the UN has taken the above estimation, 8 billion its latest Population Prospect for the year 2022.
According to the report from the UN, population growth has been on the decline since 1950, dropping to 1 percent in 2020.
However, the latest projections by the United Nations show that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
In Africa, Nigeria as an example is home to 216 million people which equates to 2.7 percent of the global population. While more than half of the projected population is concentrated in just eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Interestingly, the statement notes that India would surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
Meanwhile, the effect of the population decline is traceable to a sharp drop in fertility in recent decades for many countries.
