In preparation for the forthcoming elections in February, a popular foundation, named Omo Iya Kunmi staged a peaceful walk on Saturday, telling youths to vote and not fight.
The walk which began at 9:00 am at Oyo Durbar Stadium as the convergent point was tagged “Say No to Electoral Violence”; and organized by the convener, Alh. Saheed Siyanbola Akinkunmi popularly known as Ọmọ Iya Kunmi.
Alhaji Akinkunmi in his address stated that Nigerian youths should be aware of the danger and violence that go with the electoral process, telling them not to allow themselves to be used as thugs for politicians.
“Be informed that political thugs are mere tools in the hands of wicked and selfish. Use your brain, violence is madness.
“Never turn yourself into a murderer because of any politician. Do not turn yourself into a hopeless fellow. Remember, that there is no permanent friend not an enemy in politics, vote and not fight”. He said.
The convener during the walk, in conjunction with other organizations such as the Itesiwaju Forum, JDPM, Ahmadiyya group, Rotary Oyo Branch among others encouraged eligible voters to only perform the constitutional rights expected of them which is, to Vote.
Speaking with our Correspondent in Oyo, the convener, noted that his foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization NGO, with no affiliate to any political party.
According to him, his foundation is known for creating awareness of various situations in and out of Oyo town and Nigeria as a whole.
Over a hundred participants comprising of students, artisans, government workers from the foundation, and representatives from other groups moved from one strategic location to the other carrying different placards and with information written in English and Yoruba language in other to educate and distribute fliers to residents in the environments
Red Cross Society, Road safety, the Police, and other security personnel were also present at the event to guarantee the safety of the participants and the maintenance of law and order.
Areas visited include, Durbar stadium, Owode, Akesan market, and other strategic locations in Oyo town.
