Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, an American poet once said, “the heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” This is the case of some eleven (11) Nigerian students rewarded for their academic excellence by the British Council on Friday, 29th July, 2022.
The British Council decided to bestow 157 awards on 110 awardees from 45 schools in the country and out of this huge number, eleven (11) students stood out as ‘Best in the World’ in their respective subjects.
The event which was held at the Civic Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos; hosted British associate schools, the awardees, and parents. Everyone at the event all stood to appreciate the students for their perseverance towards their academic achievement in Cambridge Assessment International Education
It was learned that Cambridge A’level program, organised by the British Council has been present in Nigeria for over 75 years, building bridges of trust and understanding through innovative work in the arts, education, English, exams, society, peace building, and gender equality integrating it more with the young people.
This program, aside from sharpening the intelligence and birthing special skills in students, has also enabled many to secure admission into 200 level in universities of their choice home and abroad.
According to the County director, Lucy Pearson, “every year, 2 million people from 90 countries sit international exams through the British Council, and Cambridge stands as their globally recognized qualification which helps students to attend the best universities, find amazing career opportunities, set themselves up for a rewarding life.”
“We help the young people gain the skills, confidence, connections, and knowledge they need to realize their potentials” she emphasized.
The categories of the awards given in the 4th edition of the British Council Learner Awards include; ‘Best in the World’, ‘Top in Nigeria’, ‘Best Across’, ‘High Achievement’ amongst others. The essence of these awards are to appreciate and also boost their morale into future learning.
One of the awardees, Favour Ikpeaba shared her moments at the event with The Pendulum Media. She said, “I am from TESST ACADEMY (aka The Elects’ Academy) IBADAN. I was very excited when I heard I got an award for the Cambridge International examination I took.” She had described meeting other awardees from other parts of Nigeria, the world and having a selfie with the county director, British Council Nigeria, Lucy Pearson as incredible.

The students, parents, and associate schools left the venue with a renewed interest in learning and education.
