10th Senate: Senator Akpabio Wins Senate Presidency

Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa-Ibom State and lawmaker from Akwa-Ibom North West has won the seat of the senate president.

Akpabio was sworn in as the Senate President after an election that had 107 senators as participants.

He emerged winner after polling 63 votes to defeat his opponent, Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor, who got 46 votes.

The result was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal after a rowdy session at the red chamber.

Before his win, Akpabio, an anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had the support of President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
